My Faves: Figure Collection #12

I have a fairly big collection of loose figures from the 80s & 90s. The collection keeps expanding so right now, I would like to share a few of my faves with you at this time. Here we go!

She-Ra Princess of Power: Bow (Mattel, 1984)
This is figure was on my want list for a long time. I eventually got him for a few bucks off ebay. I remember my neighbor had this figure back in the 80's and I kind of thought the "Heart Pumping" action feature on Bow was pretty cool, but his lack of mustache always killed me! Why didn't any of the He-Man or She-Ra figures have facial hair like their cartoon counterparts?

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Hot Spot (Playmates, 1993)
I bought this figure off the shelf in the early 90's and honestly had no interest in opening him up. You see, I was on the verge of my teens, so I didn't really play with toys anymore, but I still loved and collected TMNT stuff. He sat sealed in his packaging for a few years before my younger brother convinced me to open him up so he could play with him. I played the part of awesome older brother and opened Hot Spot. Years later I would find out that he is one of the rarest TMNT figures around. DANG! At least my brother and I had fun playing with him and he is still in my collection.

Star Wars: Nien Nunb (Kenner, 1983)
I was very young when this figure was released, but I remember loving Star Wars, I loved playing Star Wars with my older brother and I loved this Nien Nunb action figure. I remember riding in the back of my Mom's station wagon and playing with this figure while the song "Owner of A Lonely Heart" by Yes played over the car's speakers. I lost Nien Nunb's gun in the back of that station wagon, but that did not make this plasticized version of Lando's first mate any less cool. Still my favorite figure from this line!

Ghostbusters: Muncher (Hasbro, 2021)
I really like this new "Fright Feature" action figure of Muncher from the new Ghostbusters: Afterlife movie. I bought it for my son for his birthday in September along with the 4 Ghostbusters and Ecto-1. We have had many spooky adventures since then and Muncher has been the antagonist for most of those. The figure has a stretchy plastic belly that flexes out to reveal a STOP sign and fire hydrant when you push the buttons on his back. Also, when you raise his arms the objects in his mouth move forward. Can't wait to see this guy on the big screen in a few days!

Ghostbusters FunEdibles: Pizza Venkman
This little fella is a strange addition to my Ghostbusters collection. It's Peter Venkman...if he was a slice of za! There were 2 other GB figures in this line that included a Jell-O mold Slimer and a Marshmallow man shaped like a marshmallow. I fell in love with this guy when I saw him on the shelf at our local calendar store, but I was unwilling to pay the $25 price tag on him. After Christmas last year Pizza Venkman went on CLEARANCE for around $5 and I quickly grabbed him up. Still gives me a smile when I look at this absurd vinyl tribute to one of my favorite Ghostbusters mixed with one of my favorite foods! Wonder when this movie will come out?

My Faves: Figure Collection #11

I have a fairly big collection of loose figures from the 80s & 90s. The collection keeps expanding so right now, I would like to share a few of my faves with you at this time. Here we go!

 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Bebop (Playmates, 1988)

This is actually the Bebop action figure my brother got on a shopping trip to K-Mart back in 1988! My Mom bought us almost the entire original TMNT line on that trip. I remember they were on such a good sale, my Mom couldn't pass it up. I got Leonardo, Rocksteady and the Foot Soldier. My brother got Michelangelo, Bebop, Shredder & Splinter. It's not like my Mom to spoil us like that, so they must have been damn cheap! 

 Care Bears: Funshine Bear (Play Along, ?)

I got this Funshine Bear in a grab bag from my local Goodwill Store. I think the bag was about $2 and I am always a sucker for anything Care Bears. I have been down with these happy characters since the 80s when I got my first plush Bedtime Bear!

 Star Wars: IG-88 (Kenner, 1980)

Growing up I was a Star Wars nut! Between myself, my brother and our friends, we probably had every action figure created by Kenner! IG-88 was not one that I had in my collection, but our friend Ron did and he was so cool! A bounty hunting robot...YES PLEASE! The details on this figure are outstanding for being from 1980. The folks at Kenner really did an excellent job in providing so much care in their sculpts that it made you feel like you were creating your own movies set in a galaxy far, far away when it was playtime!

 California Raisins: Singing Raisn ( Calrab,1987)

I have written before about my love of the California Raisins in the 80s. I collected the trading cards and even had one of their cassette tapes. They were so cool and the figures are pretty inexpensive when you can find them and when I do find them, I add them to my collection!

Thundercats: Vultureman (Kidworks, 1987)

I had a good collection of these miniature Thundercats figures back in the late 80s. I loved taking them on road trips or to the park. The only issue I ever had with these guys, is that I would loose the tiny weapons pretty quickly. But that's okay because one does not need weapons to continue the battle between Mumm-Ra's Mutants and the Thundercats. Fists of fury will fly! And they did in epic fashion in the back of my Mom's station wagon. Below is a video with a great collection of Thundercats toy commercials for you to enjoy!

My Faves: Figure Collection TMNT Edition

I have a fairly big collection of loose figures from the 80s & 90s. I would like to share a few of my faves with you at this time and since I have deemed August 2019 "The Month of the Turtle", this is an all TMNT edition of My Faves!!! Here we go!

Nightwatcher Raphael (Playmates, 2006)

I really enjoyed the 2007 Imagi Productions TMNT movie! The cast was great and included Chris Evans, Sarah Michelle Gellar and Patrick Stewart. The animation was pretty good. The fight scene with Leo and Raph on top of the NYC buildings in the rain was a highlight for me. I also loved the way they were able to make this a standalone movie, but still tied it in to the original Ninja Turtles movie trilogy. Anyway, the Nightwatcher character was pretty cool and when I saw this figure at a second hand store for less than a dollar, I immediately made it part of my collection. Yes, he is missing his helmet, but Raph is still a cool piece in any collection! 

Krang Mini-Vynl (Funko, 2014)

The look of these figures is pretty cool. They look cartoony, but that is the charm of this series from Funko. I picked up 4 or 5 of these blind boxes at Barnes and Noble for around $2 each. They were in their discount bin and I couldn't pass up that deal. Usually I don't like buying blind boxes, but for that price it was worth the gamble for these sweet TMNT figures. In addition to Krang I got Casey Jones, Michelangelo and April. 

Venus De Milo (Playmates, 1997)

First off, I have to say that I absolutely do not care for the TMNT: Next Mutation series from Saban. It looks cheaply made, the stories are weak and the dialogue is extremely dated. That being said, I thought the idea of adding a new Turtle to the family was a cool idea. The way it was done was pretty awful though. This can be done well as we have recently seen with the mutation to Jennika in the latest issues of the IDW Ninja Turtles comic, it just wasn't done well in this series.

Donatello LEGO Key-chain (LEGO, 2013) 

I went crazy when I heard that the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were going to have their own LEGO sets! I loved LEGO as a kid and I still love them today. It was like a mash-up of two great things coming together to form one awesome toy! The first items I saw released were these TMNT keychains and so I bought my favorite Turtle Donatello when we were in the LEGO store while on vacation in Orlando, FL. I bought a few of the smaller sets and put them together with my kids. We had fun working together, but like most of our other sets they are now broken apart and in buckets with hundreds of other LEGOs waiting to be built again!

Tokka & Rahzar (Playmates, 1991)

The first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie is one of my all time favorite flicks, but I would have to rank Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze a little higher. TMNT 2 was a little bit closer in tone to the cartoons I knew and loved, Vanilla Ice gave us "Ninja Rap" and it introduced us to 2 new mutant menaces, Tokka & Rahzar! These guys were freakin' AWESOME, but as a kid I always wondered why they didn't use Bebop and Rocksteady? It was years later that I found out it had to do something with the licensing rights of those characters. That turned out okay in the end though as we all grew to love these vicious, muscle bound, BABIES!!! I bought the Tokka action figure right off the rack in 1991, but Rahzar had to wait a few decades before I added him to my collection. I found him in a loose figure bargain bin at a vintage toy store for around $1.50! On a side note: Did we ever figure out which one was the ugly one?

I have a fairly big collection of loose figures from the 80s & 90s. I would like to share a few of my faves with you at this time. These are a few of the toys I re-discovered while cleaning out my basement closet this past weekend. Here we go!

Go-Bots: Rube (Bandai, 1984)

 When I was a kid, I did have a fondness for the Go-Bots. I had a few of them and my favorites had to be Scooter, Leader-1 and Cop-Tur. I had seen some of the cartoon episodes, but was not a loyal watcher so I did not know much about the lore of these transforming robots. I found this Rube figure in a box of old Hot Wheels cars that I picked up from a second hand store and actually thought he was a Transformer at first. Then I did some digging and he is in fact a Go-Bot and is part of a team of bad guys that fit together to make the Renegade ultra-bot, Puzzler!

Mission Masters 4: Lunar Attack Batman (Kenner, 2001)

 I still think these Batman: The Animated Series action figures look great. The simplistic forms work well for Batman. This Mission Masters version of the Dark Knight even glows in the dark! Kinda defeats the purpose of sneaking up on villains in the pitch black of night, but what the hell it looks cool!

Mega Man: Mini-Pop (Funko, 2018)

 My wife surprised me with a box of Mega Man FunkO's one day and I was extremely happy to bust the box open and pull out the prize! The prize in question happened to be this mini-Pop version of the Blue Bomber. He now sits on the top of my computer at my desk at work. He doesn't stand up too well due to the top heaviness of his head, but a little stick tack has kept him in place.

TMNT Toon Turtles: Michelangelo (Playmates, 1993)

 These Ninja Turtles toys came out just as I was entering my teenage years and my interest in toys started waning. I never did grab them off the shelves, but I wish I did! In addition to Michelangelo I have been able to track down a Toon Donatello and Toon Shredder. I hope to complete the quartet of Toon brothers in the future, but the prices seem kinda steep.

The Simpsons: Nelson Muntz (Mattel, 1990)

 Once again, this is a toy line I saw on shelves back in the day but decided to pass on them. Instead of picking up Nelson or any of the Simpson family figures, I chose a Shish Kebab Beetlejuice by Kenner. Even though that was a great figure, I wish I would have purchased some Simpsons instead. As of right now the only 2 Mattel Simpsons figures I own are Mr. Muntz and a Bartman. It's a small series of figures that I think I can hunt down pretty easily.

I have a fairly big collection of loose figures from the 80s & 90s. I would like to share a few of my faves with you at this time. These are a few of the toys I re-discovered while cleaning out my basement closet this past weekend. Here we go!

Air Raiders: Battle Squad Member (Hasbro, 1987)

These little guys were AWESOME! I loved the Air Raiders line of toys. I never owned any of the big battleships, but my neighbor did and I was envious. I loved the story of how the bad guys controlled the air and the rebels aka the Air Raiders were on a mission to make the air free to all who lived in Airlandia! The ships in the toy line featured some cool air related features from floating orbs to firing missiles. This little guy sadly is the only relic I own from this forgotten series.

 Star Wars: X-Wing Pilot Luke (Kenner, 1978)

Ah, X-Wing Luke he looks nothing like the character and is probably the least wanted of all the Luke figures in the original Kenner line. In principle it should be a cool figure, but the likeness is way off. The positive side of this figure is that you could incorporate him into any battle as an anonymous pilot who just wants to rebel against the Empire! 

 Masters of the Universe: Orko (Mattel, 1984)
I always wanted this figure as a kid, but never got him until years later. He is so cool! He looks just like the character from the cartoon series. From his removable hat to pull cord spinning action this is one of my favorite Masters of the Universe figures of all time!

TMNT: Rocksteady (Playmates, 1988)
The first ever Ninja Turtles action figure I ever owned was the original Donatello. Some time later my Mom took us shopping at Ames Department Store and the entire line of TMNT toys was on sale and for some reason she spoiled me and my brother by buying us the entire first wave of figures! On that trip I ended up getting Leonardo, Foot Soldier and Rocksteady. He was so cool and the toy pictured above is the same toy my Mom got us over 30 years ago.

Thundercats: Snarf (LJN, 1985)

This figure kinda ticked me off as a kid. He was included when you bought the original Lion-O action figure. By the time Snarf was included though, I already had a Lion-O figure and my Mom couldn't justify buying the same figure just to get this accessory. Damn LJN!!! I found this figure at a second hand store for about $1 and now I can finally add Snarf to my Thundercats collection!

I have a fairly big collection of loose figures from the 80s & 90s. I would like to share a few of my faves with you at this time. These are a few of the toys I re-discovered while cleaning out my basement closet this past weekend. Here we go!

The Simpsons: Bartman (Mattel, 1990)

The first series of The Simpsons action figures from Mattel did not have many characters. You had the Simpson family, Nelson and of course BARTMAN! I had a Bartman poster hanging in my room, a Bartman pin and of course a Bartman shirt. I was a huge fan of the show from the start, but I remember one holiday shopping spree where I passed on these figures in favor of some Kenner Beetlejuice figures! So, when the opportunity came for me to purchase this Simpsons artifact from the golden years of the show, it was a no brainer. I had to have him in my collection!

Space Jam: Lola Bunny (McDonalds, 1996)

Basketball is my favorite sport, I like the way they dribble up and down the court! So when Space Jam was released featuring my favorite player, Michael Jordan, I had to see it. When I did I was hooked! I was buying everything that had MJ or a Looney Tune characters face on it, including these McDonalds Happy Meals! Lola was first introduced in Space Jam and she was a great character. It's too bad WB hasn't really done much with her since then.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Slash (Playmates, 1990)

Ask almost any kid from the 90s who their favorite bad guy was from the TMNT Playmates line and you'll most likely get the answer SLASH! He was so cool, like a mix of the Turtles and their arch nemesis the Shredder. When me and my brother played, Slash was stronger than the Turtles, but not as smart. He was brainwashed by the Shredder to do his bidding and when the mighty TMNT had to face this powerful foe, they had to use more than brawn...they had to use their brains. This led to many great battles and traps set up on our bedroom floor. Man I miss those days!

Ghostbusters: Slimer (Funko, 2014)

This Slimer POP was a gift from my kids and wife. They knew I love the Ghostbusters and they knew I liked Funko POPS, so it was an easy gift to get for me. To this date Slimer is the only POP I have removed from his box. I just think the way they used the Slime as his stand was brilliant!

Wild C.A.T.S: Void (Playmates, 1995)

I was a child of the comic book boom of the 90s and yes I had a few Wild C.A.T.S comics that I thought would be worth some money in the future, but I was never really a fan of this X-Men clone of misfits. This figure is from the short lived Wild C.A.T.S cartoon program. I picked this up for about $1 in the package at a yard sale. She was just too shiny to pass up! I never really watched the cartoon, but it actually looks pretty cool. Take a look at the intro below and enjoy!

Pee-Wee's Playhouse Globie  (Matchbox, 1988)

I always loved Pee-Wee's Playhouse! Who didn't want to live their days out in that crazy place filled with talking chairs, robots, tiny dinosaurs and wacky neighbors! Even after the effects of his arrest in 1991, I still was a closet Pee-Wee fan. I remember kids revolting and destroying his merchandise right in front of my eyes. I will never be able to unsee a talking Pee-Wee doll thrown into a pond. His floating body just sitting their lifeless! Anyway...back to the now! I saw this figure in a Goodwill grab bag and for a few bucks I had my own personal Globie!

 Glo-Snail (Playskool, 1984)
I always wanted a Glo-Worm doll, but never got one. The closest we got were these glow in the dark figurines. In addition to this Snail, I also had a Glo-Spider and Glo-Cricket. There wasn't any articulation to these figures, but they were great to play with after the parents shut the lights off for bedtime!

 D&D Strongheart Paladin (LJN, 1983)
The LJN Dungeons & Dragons toy line is extremely underrated! There were so many amazing figures in that line that ranged from sweet action figures (Warduke, Zarak) to huge evil monsters (Tiamat, Minotaur) to the amazing Fortress of Fangs playset! Once again, I found this legendary character in a grab bag at Goodwill. You can really find some good stuff there!

Blue Shogun Zord (Bandai, 1995)

My little brother was a huge fan of the Power Rangers and I must admit that I got sucked into the early years of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers series. Mostly because of Ernie, the juice bar guy...not really. It's probably because the series was like a live action version of Voltron. But with every new season my interest waned and by the time the Shogun Zords made it to Earth in an attempt to stop the baddies from space, I was no longer watching. But hey, it was Power Rangers, the toy was cheap and I ended up buying it!

 Saxy California Raisin (Applause, 1987)

The California Raisins were a bunch of cool guys! They had their own set of sticker cards, a Christmas Special and even a few albums released! I owned the "Sweet, Delicious & Marvelous" cassette tape and it introduced me to such great songs as "Sittin on the dock of the bay" and "Tracks of my tears". What ever happened to these guys? My Faves: Figure Collection #6

I have a fairly big collection of loose figures from the 80s & 90s. I would like to share a few of my faves with you at this time and since it's the Halloween season, I'm gonna make this one an ALL BAD GUYS EDITION! Here we go!

Toon Shredder (Playmates, 1992)

I never had this version of the Shredder as a kid, but always wanted him. He was released around the time I stopped buying toys and hit puberty. This version of Shredder is what we should have got the first time around instead of that purple and dark blue suited imposter that was released in 1988. I just wish he wasn't so damn hard to pose!

 Mumm-Ra Mini-Figurine (Kid Works, 1986)

These mini versions of the Thundercats characters were a favorite of me and my brother. They had no articulation, but they were travel size and always made the shopping trips with our Mom all that more epic and exciting!

Kang from Treehouse of Horror XVI (Burger King, 2011)

I have a soft spot for this Treehouse of Horror series from Burger King. They were released around the time my twins were born. Myself and the wife had been stuck at the hospital for a few days and my wife's parents were cool enough to watch our oldest daughter. She was going to become a big sister, but wasn't able to visit the hospital yet so I still wanted to keep her involved and do something special. I picked her up from the house one day and took her to Burger King and we got some Kids Meals that had these toys inside! Good memories.

Target Exclusive Titanium Darth Vader (Kenner, 2010)

I don't have too much to say about this figure except that I picked up this Titanium Darth on clearance while I was working at Target. I'm a big Star Wars fan and Mr. Vader is my favorite character. How could I pass up this toy?

Battle Armor Skeletor (Mattel, 1984)

I absolutely loved this guy as a kid! To this day I still feel giddy every time I roll back his battle damaged chest plate and then punch it to reveal dents and scratches! It really makes me feel like the most powerful man in the universe! This version of Skeletor is great, but he still comes in at a close second to my number one pick, Dragon Blaster Skeletor.

 I have a fairly big collection of loose figures from the 80s & 90s. I would like to share a few of my faves with you at this time. You ready? Here we go!

Michelangelo: TMNT Movie (Playmates, 2014)

This 11 inch Michelangelo figure from the 2014 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie was a major award! Land O' Frost lunch meats had an online promotion in conjunction with the film. When you bought a jumbo pack of their lunch meats a sweepstakes card was included with a unique code that you had to enter on their website.

I did just that and 4 weeks later I received this extra large action figure in the mail! Of course my kids wanted to play with him, so we tore open the box and he spent a few years in my son's playtime rotation. He has since been moved to the basement where the lesser played with toys dwell.

Catra: She-Ra Princess of Power (Mattel, 1985)

When me and my brother were at the height of our Masters of the Universe insanity the Princess of Power line was introduced. We only had the She-Ra female action figure because my sister got it as a gift, but collected all of the Horde troop! I found this Catra at a thrift store for a dollar or two and added her to my collection. I may have to get some tips from my wife on how to tame that crazy mane of hers?

Imperial Tie Fighter Pilot: Star Wars (Kenner, 1983)

OH MAN! Where to start with this guy? I never owned this figure growing up, but my neighbor did and I was envious of it! He was so badass! A jet black storm trooper should always be on the top of any kids want list. Found this guy last year in a second hand store and my 5 year old dreams finally came true!

Screaming Hero Janine: The Real Ghostbusters (Kenner, 1989)

Not much to say here about this Janine Melnitz figure. Never owned one as a kid, because owning girl action figures was seen as a sign of weakness on the playground. I am a huge fan of the Ghostbusters, so I picked her up for a few dollars to complete my team. Wish I had her ghost that made the screaming sound though?

Bushwhacker Luke: WWF (Hasbro, 1991)

My interest with the WWF ended in the late 80s. I always liked the Junkyard dog, Hulk Hogan and Macho Man Randy Savage. My friends had some of these figures and they bring back a small amount of nostalgia whenever I see any Hasbro WWF figures. To date Bushwhacker Luke is the only one I have in my collection. These guys were crazy! It's too bad they came up after I stopped watching wrestling.
